The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation of Washington was established in 1961 as a statewide nonprofit organization supporting families and educating the community about sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). In 2007, the Board of Directors voted to change the name of the organization to reflect its expanded mission to respond to and reduce the risk of all sudden and unexpected infant deaths (of which SIDS is one type). The Northwest Infant Survival Alliance – SIDS Foundation of Washington (NISA-SIDS) was shortened to the Northwest Infant Survival & SIDS Alliance in 2009, otherwise known as NISSA.
The Northwest Infant Survival & SIDS Alliance is dedicated to the informational and emotional support of bereaved families, to the education of the general public and professionals, and to the ultimate elimination of sudden infant death through research.
We fulfill our mission through the following activities:
- Grief support for bereaved families including family packets, one-on-one peer support, three support groups in Washington State, and referrals.
- Educational outreach and awareness campaigns including our Safe Sleep Kit, Cribs for Kids, and Cradleboard programs.
- Trainings for health care providers and child care providers, presence at health fairs, and presentations to new parent groups.
